Cool graphics are a definite eye-catcher when it comes to effective trade show displays, but don’t underestimate the impact of a great photo. Incorporating photographs into a display can accomplish a few objectives. First, they generally capture attention for longer than regular graphics, so you have a better chance of engaging the viewer. Secondly, they can tell visitors a lot about your company. Finally, they stand out amongst the crowd, particularly if you take the time to find the “right” photo (or photos) for your display.

The photo you choose needs to say something about your business. Is it fun? Original? Family-focused? Take a long and hard look at what your company does and find a photo that illustrates these concepts. It is important that the photo complements your business and does not confuse visitors; otherwise you may end up turning them away. For example, a photo of a happy family may be great for an insurance company, but not so much for a company that sells motorcycles.

Your trade show display photo also needs to be interesting. While this is a bit subjective, photos with people in them tend to hold attention longer than landscapes or abstracts. The photo should also have a clear focal point, somewhere for the viewer’s eyes to travel to. Photos that don’t have a focal point won’t hold attention for as long.

Lastly, you need to decide where you are going to source your photo. Online stock photo agencies provide a plethora of photos for you to choose from for very reasonable prices. However, don’t discount the value of an original piece by a local photographer, particularly if there is something unique about your business that you want to convey. Prior to purchasing a digital file, confer with a graphic design company as to the quality, size, and file type you should request.
